A father recounts the frustrations he and his wife experienced during her pregnancy and the birth of their first child. They wished to have a natural birth without anesthetic, for the baby not to be given silver nitrate eye-drops and for the baby and mother to be together as much as possible from the moment of birth. They found constant opposition to their requests, with hospital procedure and the law being cited (sometimes erroneously) as justification.
