Article title : 'Cognitive behavior therapy for chronic fatigue syndrome': Ms. Deale and colleagues reply.
Author: Deale, Alicia; Chalder, Trudie; Wessely, Simon
Year: 1998 Journal: American Journal of Psychiatry Vol : Issue 155 : 10 Pages: 14611462
The authors respond to comments by M. Sharpe (see record 1998 12596 029) regarding the discussion by A. Deale et al (see record 1997 07483 015) of cognitive behavior therapy for chronic fatigue syndrome. The authors discuss the earlier clinical trials described by Sharpe (Sharpe et al, 1996) and describe another trial by A. Lloyd (1993) that found cognitive behavior therapy to be superior to a credible placebo treatment of relaxation. In both trials, a combination of graded activity and cognitive restructuring was used; the pattern of improvement and proportions of patients improving was similar in both studies.
