The functioning of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) has long been of special interest to the Body Psychotherapy field. Much of our clinical success is based in theories and practices that bring us into interaction with this ancient and profoundly body-based regulatory system. It is with great pleasure that we open the conference with a keynote speech from the creative and exciting neuro-developmentalist Stephen Porges, who will undate our understanding of current autonomic research and will introduce his own poly-vagal theory, which adds relational and social behavior to the known primitive survival strategies of fight/flight and freeze. Bessel van der Kolk, our eminent and body-friendly colleague, serves as a discussant on the relevance of Stephen's work to the study and treatment of trauma.
